Three year old, considering egg trial
hello everyone, I am hoping for a little more insight into a possible upcoming food trial...at approx 8 months old, our son was diagnosed with FPIES, egg being his only trigger food. We have easily removed egg from his diet and he's been happy and thriving. The last exposure was 02/2016, we were at a friend's house and a plate of brownies was put in front of him and he naturally took one like every other kiddo at the table. A bite or two occurred before I lunged across the room. As you know,...

Re: Three year old, considering egg trial
Wow- thanks everyone for the useful information both here and on facebook. My 2-year-old son with FPIES (multiple-food failure) has never had eggs, and I was wondering how to go about trialing it. Baked goods sound like a good first bet. My allergist has urged me to do retrials even though my "mommy gut" was saying no. (I did one retrial after 1 year and the food failed again.) Thanks for the information about waiting until age 3 with a good 18 mos.-2 years after the last reaction. Good advice!

Re: Three year old, considering egg trial
Most well versed FPIES doctors recommend you wait 18 months to 2 years after your last reaction to retrial a trigger. I would wait at least that longer maybe longer if the reaction was bad. If the hypothesis that reactions are Tcell mediated is correct you have to give the body enough time to regenerate new Tcells over and over each time forgetting to react a little more until they forget entirely. This is my simplistic way of explaining a complex body system.

When to start trials?
Our son is 3 years 3 months old and was diagnosed with FPIES around 7 months. His last reaction was around 9 months, and we have been avoiding dairy (his only trigger food) since then. His reactions have landed us in the ER but have never been life threatening. I've read most FPIES cases clear up by 3 years, but obviously not all of them. Our allergist recommends a trial in his office with an IV in place out of an abundance of caution. With a simple/mild case like we have, I hate making him...

Re: When to start trials?
My 2.5 yr old daughter has FPIES dairy only as well. Diagnoses at 6mo. We did a dairy trial in the allergist dr office a little after 2 years old(yogurt) and she failed miserably. We will do another in office trial at 4 years old.

Re: When to start trials?
My kids have more than 75 triggers but mild to moderate reactions. We trial at home. You have to remember the doctor has to cover themselves from a liability perspective. You have to decide what’s right for your family. Do you handle crisis well? Do you live near a hospital? If in office I would do full tilt the most raw dairy you would normally eat and milk. If at home I would be more conservative and trial then “dairy ladder.”

Re: When to start trials?
My son is now FPIES free at 5 years old- it's a miracle! And my son was like the Murphy's kiddos- failed 50+ foods and barely had anything to eat. We also trialed at home as my son only had sudden severe reactions as a baby (the only severe reactions as a toddler were if I couldn't find the offending food promptly enough- otherwise mild to moderate). As far as dairy goes (yep allergic to that included in the 50+ foods), we trialed yogurt at age 2 and 3 and both failed. We then tried cheese...

Such valuable input - thank you each for taking the time to respond and help our family! It's a club no one wants to be a part of but we're thankful there are others in it with us.
